WHAT IS CATARACT?
Cataract means the blurring of the eye lens. The eye lens plays an important role in the refraction of the eye as it enables the eye to see sharply both near and far.
In case of cataract development, the lens becomes progressively blurred, and thus vision is also progressively impaired. Unfortunately, cataract cannot be corrected with glasses and may only be treated using surgery. During cataract surgery, the lens, which has become grey, is removed and replaced by a special plastic lens.

HOW DOES CATARACT SURGERY WORKS?
Cataract surgery is performed using the so-called phacoemulsification technique. This is the most advanced way to remove a cataract lens. I also offers FEMTO laser-assisted cataract surgery combined with phacoemulsification as a more gentle procedure. The treatment only requires local anesthesia with eye drops. The procedure itself usually takes less than 10 minutes and is almost painless. After the surgery, you need to rest for 1 hours at the clinic, if complications are observed you may go home and come for a check-up the next day.

Traveling from abroad?
You can choose to come for an examination combined with a consultation which takes 1,5 hours and no overnight stay is required and come back for a later date for surgery when one night of stay is advised so your eyes can be checked the day after surgery.
You can also decide to stay for the surgery after the consultation. In this case we recommend a min 10 days stay as we might need to order your lens for the manufacturer (we only have a selected range of IOLs on stock). If you consider this option we will also book a conditional surgery appointment for you when you choose the date of the consultation.
We also offer a free-of-charge second check-up what you can attend anytime during the years following your surgery. Here we can also prescribe your glasses if you will need any after surgery.
HOW DOES FEMTO LASER ASSISTED CATARACT SURGERY WORK?
The FEMTO laser is now used not only in laser vision correction, but also as an aid in cataract surgery (and IOL surgery). Laser cataract surgery is gentler, but just as safe, as the traditional surgery performed exclusively with surgical knife and ultrasound. In the traditional procedure, the first step is to make an incision, which is done with a microsurgical scalpel. This is followed by opening the lens case with another device. These steps are performed by the Swiss Ziemer FEMTO Z8 NEO laser during FEMTO laser cataract surgery. With its precision and low energy, the Ziemer company’s laser minimizes tissue damage and enables less ultrasound energy to be used in subsequent surgical steps. After FEMTO laser cataract surgery, recovery can be faster and, in the case of certain anatomical conditions and types of artificial lenses, it can even provide a better visual experience.
WHAT EXAMINATIONS ARE PREFORMED BEFORE A CATARACT SURGERY?
Before cataract surgery, a comprehensive eye examination is always performed. The cataract status is recorded and the patient is checked for other ocular diseases. IOL datas are measured by using the most advanced Alcon ARGOS biometry. In addition, the ideal IOL is selected through a consultation about your visual preferences.

Dénes Kemény, olimpic gold medalist waterpolo coach
Dénes Kemény, a former Olympic water polo player and coach, no longer needs glasses thanks to his lens replacement surgery. Previously, searching for and using reading glasses was a daily nuisance that interfered with his active hobbies, like fishing and hunting.
